Abstract : Women religious made enormous humanitarian contributions to American society that remains largely unrecognized. Since the eighteenth century, Catholic Sisters pioneered in bringing schools, hospitals, and social service across the country to many places that had none.
This film looks at the history of Catholic Sisters in North America and specifically the Sisters of Providence, who came from Canada to Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1873 to aid orphans, the poor, and the sick. They developed a comprehensive network of non-profit health care and social service facilities across Western Massachusetts that grew to meet the changing needs of their community.
In an age where few women choose religious life, these sisters exhibit the same qualities as their earlier pioneers: adaptation, action, and a deep commitment to social justice.
Subjects : Providence and government of God
